Windy: Hello, Neil. In today's program we will talk about tourism, but in a very special place: Antarctica. It's considered the last great wilderness on Earth. Neil: Yes, in Antarctica there are only research stations and few tourists. Windy: Not so few - about 74,000 tourists went there from October 2019 to April 2020. Neil: That many? Windy: Yes. By the way, do you know anything about the current conditions of the South Pole? Neil: I've read somewhere that the ice caps there are melting because of global warming. Windy: Yes, that's worrying. Neil: I'd like to visit Antarctica before it melts too much. And I want to see the penguins. They're amusing! Windy: Yes, they are. But you are not allowed to get any nearer than five meters from Antarctic wildlife, and you cannot touch the penguins. Neil: Sure, I understand completely. I love traveling, but I wonder whether it's fair to allow tourists in Antarctica. It has such a sensitive environment. You know, all visitors leave a footprint. I wonder what we can do to preserve its environment. Windy: I just read an article by a news reporter who visited Antarctica with a tourist group. Neil: Oh? Were there any restrictions on tourists? Windy: She said that tourists had to clean their clothes before they left the ship to go on land. There was no eating or smoking on land; tourists were instructed to take nothing away, not even a bit of snow, except photographs, and leave nothing behind. Neil: Good for the environment. Windy: And it's said that carefully-controlled tourism is in fact not just OK but useful. Tourism creates a global community of people ready to support and fund its preservation. Neil: Sounds reasonable.【缺少答案,请补充】
Mark: Hi, Jane. How's it going? Jane: Pretty good. I've been thinking about our trip to Ireland all week. Mark: Me too. I'm excited about it. Jane: Shall we start planning for it? You probably have a list of things we need to plan, don't you? Mark: Yes. Jane: So, what's the first? Mark: Well, the first thing we need to do is book our tickets. Let's look online for the cheapest flights we can find. Jane: Sure. Mark: The second thing we need to do is book a hotel. Jane: Can we just wait until we get there to find something? Mark: No. Summer is a busy time to travel. If we wait until the last minute, all the hotels might be full. Jane: I guess you're right. Mark: I've found two travel websites about Ireland. Here, have a look. They both have sections about the hotels. Jane: Great! Mark: Why don't we read through the hotel sections and choose two hotels that we think are good and affordable? Jane: Sure. That's a good idea. Mark: Now, we also need to work out what we will do in Dublin. Jane: Wow! You want to plan everything. Mark: Well, we shouldn't get there and waste time trying to figure out what to do at that point. Jane: I know. I'm just kidding. Mark: The websites also have sections about attractions, and things to do. Let's read them and make a list of things we want to see. Jane: OK. Mark: So, we have flights, the hotel and things to do. Shall we meet again this week to talk about things and then make bookings? Jane: Sure. How about Wednesday? Mark: That works. Jane: OK, see you on Wednesday then. Mark: See you.【缺少答案,请补充】
If you know a millennial, then you know how important travel is to this generation. Research has shown that today's 20-somethings are spending more on travel than other traditional investments. For millennials, life is all about the experiences. They seek adventures that are authentic and unforgettable through traveling. Millennials travel to experience new cultures. They aren't heading to popular tourist attractions to party anymore. Instead, their trips are all about authenticity, and cultural immersion is the best way to achieve that goal. To experience the local culture, they also rank sampling the local cuisine as an important part of their travels. Millennials travel to seek self-discovery. As many of them are still at the beginning of their professional life, a travel experience can open their eyes to what they really want. Traveling to different places may help them find themselves more capable than they ever thought possible, which can fuel their pursuit of dreams and change the course of their life. As digital natives, millennials use social media for travel inspiration. Seeing friends head off to distant destinations makes them want to book tickets, too. They often check social media to find the places they want to see and experience on their own. Smaller, more unique destinations are getting lots of likes and shares among them. Whether or not you are a millennial, you can learn from their traveling style: Hit the road and find unique adventures. The authenticity of your experiences will shape who you are and who you will become.【缺少答案,请补充】
My name is Cindy Cave, and I am a travel documentary director. I have always loved traveling since I was just a little kid. It makes me feel alive - that I'm growing, learning and expanding. It opens my mind and my heart to new ways of living and looking at the world. However, producing travel documentaries is very different from being a traveler. When you are making a travel documentary, everything is a lot more complicated because you not only have to raise the money, hire the crew, and make sure they do their jobs and have all the equipment you need, but have to work out all the travel, food and sleeping arrangements. Also, related experiences and resources really matter. Before producing my first travel documentary, I had worked in the movie business for more than 15 years. I have worked in both production and the camera department on major movie commercials and music videos all over the world. So when I decided to start producing travel documentaries, I already had lots of contacts and was able to gain lots of favors and get professionals to work for me. I have won some awards for my work over the years. But when people ask me about the most rewarding aspect of creating travel documentaries, I always say that the most rewarding part has been inspiring people to move out of their comfort zones, travel across the world, and learn not only about other cultures and people, but also about themselves. Inspiring people to broaden their horizons is extremely fulfilling for me.【缺少答案,请补充】
Susan: Hi Tom. You look upset. What's the matter? Tom: Hi Susan. I feel like I'm at a crossroads in my career, and I don't know what to do. Susan: Why do you feel so, Tom? Tom: You see, I'm in the IT field, and my job pays well. But the issue is I'm not as happy as I used to be when doing this type of work. Susan: Do you mean you are considering changing? Tom: Well, maybe. But my fear is that if I switch careers now, I won't be making that much money. Susan: Actually your situation is far from unique. Many people feel trapped in jobs that they don't really like, but cannot quit because of financial reasons. Tom: If only there were jobs that we liked and were well-paid! But that doesn't seem easy. Susan: Of course not! Now it seems that you are faced with two options: an unpleasant job with higher pay or an enjoyable job with probably lower pay. Tom: Yes. What would you choose then? Susan: I'd rather have a low-paying job that I love. A rewarding career is more about personal fulfillment than making big money. It's very difficult to develop motivation and be creative in a job you dislike. Tom: That makes sense. You're more likely to succeed if you're doing a job you care about. Susan: And research shows that if you have a job that matches your personal values, you're much more likely to be happy than if you're doing something meaningless to you. Meaningful work is one of the keys to personal fulfillment. Tom: Yes, absolutely. It's worth sacrificing a high income to find a job that is meaningful and fulfilling.【缺少答案,请补充】
The traditional ideas of work and leisure have blurred a lot in recent years. Businesses and individuals both re-evaluate the nine-to-five workdays. Instead of the daily grind at the office, work now invades leisure time and leisure time invades work. The phenomenon has been called "weisure time" by sociologist Dalton Conley. "Weisure time" often refers to free time spent doing work or work-related tasks. Because of increased responsibilities at work, many people work more than ever before. A lot of work relies on creativity and teamwork these days, which also means that employees should keep in touch. They may need to be in touch with colleagues and business associates while hanging out with their families. Nowadays, many people are not only busier, but also enjoy their jobs more than before. They don't mind if both of their lives mix. Computer and social networks are important in "weisure time". For one thing, social media enables people to stay connected during business hours. Talking with friends online stimulates a pleasurable response in people's brains, thus making the business days much more enjoyable. Social media also makes it more convenient for people to maintain connections with their co-workers during off time. Dalton Conley explains that at some point there could be a negative reaction because there is less time to relax. Although people see weisure time as a solution for now, they may not always be willing to mix their personal and professional lives.【缺少答案,请补充】
