The Grand Ole Opry, in Nashville, Tennessee, has always been America’s most important concert hall for country music. Every Saturday night the place is filled to the ceiling with country music fans. One Saturday in January 1967, it was a very special night at the Opry. For the first time, a black man was an attraction. Country music had always been thought of as “White Music”. For many, it was a strange sight to see Charley Pride step onto the Opry stage. Some people felt curious about whether a black man could sing country songs. But Charley’s smooth voice quickly won over the Opry crowd. Charley was so good that before long, he was country music’s biggest star. Like many country singers, Charley was raised on a farm. He spent his youth milking cows and picking cotton. But he knew he wasn’t going to make farming his career. Later he became a baseball player. Charley made it to a major league team. But he didn’t stay on for more than one season. In the winter, after the baseball season, Charley sang at a local nightclub. One evening, Red Sovine, a great country music star, helped Charley sing. Red told Charley to sing. Red told Charley to forget about baseball and go for a singing career. Charley took the advice and became a true hit-maker. His records were always near the top on the list. Some were Number One all over the country. Today Charley Pride is still one of the biggest stars in country music. But he says his real wish is to own a baseball team.【缺少答案,请补充】
Public schools in Washington D.C. provide students with musical instruments for free. When something goes wrong with an instrument, Charles West and Larry Jernigan do the repairs. Both men approach their work with a passion. For them, it’s important that students have a joyful experience with music. The two have worked together for almost 20 years. This year alone, they’ve fixed about 450 instruments. Both men are musicians and music lovers, so learning to do repairs came naturally. “I have been a musician all my life,” says West. “I played in an orchestra here in the city. I majored in music in college. I played in an army band.” Jernigan’s musical interests are varied. “I was formerly trained in the piano and the guitar. The alto sax and the flute, I picked up while working here.” In addition to fixing instruments, the two also go to schools to instruct teachers and students on how to make minor repairs on their own. West believes if children start early and stay involved with music, it enriches other areas of their lives. “I see that in other kids. I see it in myself. I have seen it hundreds of times and it works,” he says. “They learn teamwork. They learn patience and respect.” But West has concerns about the future of music in the electronic age. “This instant age has taken away from the sit-down, the patience. And to learn to play an instrument, it takes patience, it takes diligence and it takes time.” Being able to enjoy music on the job is one of the benefits of the job. Both men agree their best rewards are the students’ performances.【缺少答案,请补充】
