Throughout human existence we have relied on the oceans — for food, for recreation, for economic opportunities and so on. However, with more than half the world’s population now living within 100 kilometers off the coast, it’s not surprising that our activities are taking their toll. Human impacts have increased along with our rapid population growth and substantial developments in technology. Humans living near the coast have always used the ocean as a source of food. However, with advances in fishing equipment, larger ships and new tracking technologies, many fish stocks around the world have reduced significantly. Fish stocks on continental shelf areas are now widely considered to be fully or overexploited. Aside from reducing fish stocks, unsustainable fishing practices can have other negative impacts on the marine environment. These techniques also often capture non-target species (known as bycatch) that are then discarded. Our oceans have long been used as an intentional dumping ground for all sorts of waste including sewage, industrial run-off and chemicals. In more recent times, policy changes in many countries have reflected the view that the ocean does not have an infinite capacity to absorb our waste. However, marine pollution remains a major problem and threatens life in the sea at all levels. Some marine pollution may be accidental, for example, oil spills caused by tanker accidents. Some may be indirect, when pollutants from our communities flow out to sea via storm-water drains and rivers. Some effects may not be immediately obvious, for example, bio-accumulation — the process where levels of toxic chemicals in organisms increase as they eat each other at each successive trophic level in the food web. All marine pollution has the potential to seriously damage marine habitats and life in the sea. Scientists are concerned that marine pollution places extra stress on organisms that are already threatened or endangered.【缺少答案,请补充】
Eating herring (鲱鱼), drinking snaps and then dancing in a ring during the light summer nights — is that typically Swedish? Yes, perhaps. But a Swedish tradition that is equally important as the midsummer celebrations is the much more ordinary “fika,” getting together with a friend (or friends) to enjoy a cup of coffee, but not for a lengthy period of time or in such a way that it inconveniences the person extending the invitation. In both cases, the issue at hand is one of “intangible cultural heritage,” things that cannot be physically touched such as traditions, stories, music, dance, and craft skills. Norwegians would perhaps highlight their custom of “gå på tur” — going on excursions on foot or on skis. In Denmark, everyone knows what “hygge” is — to spontaneously enjoy the good life with the people you love. In 1972, UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization adopted a convention for the protection of important world cultural heritage. The problem was that there was a built-in injustice right from the get-go: Compared to Africa and Asia, a disproportionately high number of items in Europe were appearing on the protected list. Therefore, the question that had to be asked was, from a broader human perspective, were ancient, inanimate stone buildings really the only things worth protecting? Of course not. This is why, in 2003, UNESCO adopted a convention to “preserve the intangible,” and many developing countries were quick to get their traditions included on the official list. Annika Sjöberg is responsible for coordinating the work of the agency in Sweden. She has been, and continues to be, surrounded with suggestions of intangible cultural heritage worthy of protection, submitted by committed citizens and organizations wanting to see their particular traditions included on the list.【缺少答案,请补充】
It is important for a college student to master the skill of time management. Time management is exactly what it sounds like: It is the skill of being able to manage your time effectively. Some of the greatest reasons to manage your time effectively include the fact that you are going to have tons of different deadlines for various academic activities, and you want to be able to have a social life on top of it. As a college student, there are a couple of ways that you can go about achieving great time management skills. One of the best strategies that you can use is to schedule events. You can use the calendar that the school will provide you with in the beginning of the year, or you can use the calendar application on your mobile device. Scheduling makes you more likely to complete the assignments and activities and it is going to be the approach that you want to stick to. Different strategies work for different students. Another way to go about improving your time management is to write down, or document the amount of time that is allotted for various activities. If you need to finish multiple assignments or activities in one evening, then give yourself the appropriate amount of time to complete each task. When you are in college, it is vital to your academic and social life that you know clearly how much time is available for each aspect of your experience. By engaging in time management, you will better be able to structure your daily activities, to be able to accomplish your academic goals and still have time and energy to socialize. When you are disorganized, it is easy to become unhappy with the college experience. This is why it is so important to plan your time accordingly.【缺少答案,请补充】
Aristotle claims that there are three types of friendship: friendship based on utility, pleasure, and virtue. The first is a friendship of utility. In this kind of relationship, the two parties are not in it for the affection of one another. Rather, they’re in it because each party receives a benefit from the other. It’s not permanent in nature, and whenever the benefit ends, so does the relationship that brought the parties together. Aristotle observed this to be more common in older folks. An example of this would be a business or a work relationship. The second kind is a friendship of pleasure. This one, however, is more common in people that are younger. It’s the kind of relationship frequently seen among college friends or people who share the same hobbies or participate in the same sports team. The source of such a friendship is more emotional, and it’s often the most short-lived of the relationships. It’s fine for as long as the two parties gain enjoyment through a mutual interest in something external, but it ends as soon as either tastes or preferences change. The final form, a friendship of virtue, often arises when two people recognize that they have similar values and goals, and they have similar visions for how the world should be. There is quite generally a base level of goodness required in each person for it to exist in the first place. People that lack empathy or care for others seldom develop this kind of relationships because, more often than not, their preference is to look for pleasure or utility. Friendships of virtue take time and trust to build - but it’s also more powerful and enduring. They depend on mutual growth occurring.【缺少答案,请补充】
