Passage 1 The innovation of the Internet is one of the most transformative developments in human history, and its influence is comparable to that of printing presses and telegraphs. Today, more than 2 billion people around the world have access to more information than ever before and can communicate with each other instantly, often using connected mobile devices they carry anywhere. But the enormous impact of the Internet is only just beginning. "The mass spread of the Internet is prompting one of the most exciting social, cultural, and political changes in history, and unlike the early days of change, the impact is entirely global," Schmidt and Cohen write in their new book, The New Digital Age. Perhaps the most profound changes will come when the 5 billion people around the world who currently lack Internet access get online. The writers do a great job of evaluating the impact of the Internet revolution on individuals, governments and the news media. But if the book has one major drawback, it is the writers don't spend enough time critically focusing on the role of Internet companies in this big evolution. In their book, the authors provide the most authoritative volume to date, describing how the Internet will affect our lives in the coming decades. They paint a picture of a world in which individuals companies, institutions and governments must cope with two realities, one physical reality and one virtual reality. At the heart of the book is "Technology is neutral. but people are not." The author takes this concept as a starting point to go beyond the now familiar dichotomy between optimists and pessimists which is the hallmark of the recent debate about whether the rise of the Internet is ultimately good or had for society. In an interview with Time earlier this week, Cohen said that while he and his co-authors are optimistic about many aspects of the Internet, they are realistic about the risks of the next 5 billion people going online, especially in terms of personal privacy and state surveillance.【缺少答案,请补充】
