For weeks, I had been searching for a summer job. Unluckily, no one would take a chance on me. Managers at various places all said, "We really need somebody with experience." My last hope was an ice cream shop I often visited. When Sandy, manager of the shop, read my application, she asked, "Can you start at nine this Saturday morning?" I eagerly replied, "Yes!" I arrived at the shop a few minutes after nine on my first day. I apologized and promised never to be late again. Before I started my job, I had imagined myself handing out ice creams to happy customers. But it turned out to be so different. One kid made me feel like a fool when I gave her the wrong flavor (口味). Another kid asked for a free ice cream after he dropped his. "It's not my problem!" I argued. Sandy came up and said, "Sometimes people aren't very nice. Be patient, Emily." I nodded, holding back tears. The day was filled with crazy searches for the right things the customers asked for. But what made me mad most was the shouts from the impatient customers. The next day was my friend Polly's birthday. I was having fun at her birthday party when someone asked me about my ice cream job. I suddenly remembered that I should be on my night shift (轮班) in 30 minutes. "You can't leave," Polly cried. "Just say you're sorry and do a double shift later." I took her advice. However, I paid a big price for it. When I went back to the shop the next morning, Sandy told me I had been replaced. It was all because I did not show up for work the previous night. I hated to admit it, but I did fail to do my job. Thanks to my ice cream job, I learned a lot about responsibility.【缺少答案,请补充】
Have you ever noticed that people speak differently to babies? Researchers find that adults like parents and other caregivers change their speech patterns, particularly pitches (音高), when talking to young children. Researchers call these changes in speech patterns child - directed communication, or simply, baby talk. Child - directed communication is well - known in human cultures. However, not much is known about its use by animals. A group of scientists want to know if dolphins, almost the most intelligent animal, use child - directed communication. As dolphins communicate with each other with whistles (口哨声), the scientists compare mother dolphins' whistles when they are alone and when they are with their babies. They find that dolphins also practice baby talk. Female dolphins change the pitches of their whistles when with their babies. This is similar to the increase in pitch that occurs when humans speak to young children. The scientists believe one purpose of human's baby talk is to help children learn to speak. Although parents use the same words to talk with both young children and adults, they change how they say the words when talking with young children. In this way, they help develop children's ability to speak. Similarly, dolphins communicate with children and adults using the same whistles. When speaking to babies, they change their pitches as humans do. Although the scientists are not sure why dolphins use baby talk, they believe it is also to help baby dolphins learn to whistle. The research reminds us how important baby talk is to children's learning of speaking. Whenever you speak with young children, remember that how you say things could be as important as what you say. It helps the children learn how to communicate as they grow.【缺少答案,请补充】
