Everybody telecommuting (远程办公). “It won’t work in most jobs”, “It costs too much”, “It reduces air pollution”,“It helps people balance family and work responsibilities”, and “Most people are doing it”. In reality researchers continue to find strong growth and acceptance of telecommuting. Nearly two-thirds of the top 1000 companies in the world have a telecommuting program, and 92 percent say it reduces cost and improves worker productivity (生产力). The days of everyone commuting to the office five days a week are disappearing. How much living space does a person need? What happens when his space needs are not met? Scientists are making experiments on rats to try to determine the effects of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studies have shown that the behaviour of rats is greatly affected by space. If rats have enough living space, they eat well, sleep well and produce their young well. But if their living conditions become too crowded, their behaviour and even their health change obviously. They can't sleep and eat well, and signs of fear and worry become clear. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even kill each other. Thus, for rats, population and violence(暴力) are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Is enough space not only satisfactory, but necessary for human survival? 1.This passage is mainly about______. A.living space and behavior B. population and living conditions C.interesting experiments on rats D.a natural law for human society 2.What is the purpose of the experiments described in the passage? A.To determine how much living space a rat needs B.To see what happens when rats live in a limited space. C.To know the likely effects of inadequate living space on human beings. D.To find out the relationship between population and living conditions. 3. How would rats behave when their living conditions become too crowded? A) They eat a lot and become friendly to others. B) They sleep little and act quite peacefully. C) They eat little but sleep soundly. D) They become nervous and tend to be war-like. 4.The passgae suggests that overcrowded conditions_____. A.are directly related with population B.may cause an increase in violence C.may lead to high birth rate D.may bring about pollution problems 5.The author seems to imply that______ A.human society is very similar to that of rats B.birth control is essential for a better life C.efforts should be made to improve living conditions D.rats are not social animals
In the past two years, millions of Americans have suddenly taken an interest in the bicycle as if it were a new invention. Bike sales doubled every year between 1960 and 1970, and there are nearly 70 million bikes in the United States today. That's more than two for every three automobiles. Of course, the bike has been around for more than 150 years, and this isn't America's first bicycle boom (兴旺). A wave of bike enthusiasm swept the land in the late 1800s and bicycle production hit two million units in 1897. Then with the coming of the auto, bicycling declined, and for years remained popular only with children and a few adults. Now, national concern with air pollution and physical fitness has brought the bike back to the forefront (重要位置) particularly with adults. More than eight million bikes were sold in the United States last year and a third of them went to adults. The year before, only 15 percent of new bike sales were for adults. 1.In the United States, the bicycle is_____ A.becoming popular again B.creating traffic problems C.popular chiefly with children D.replacing the family car 2.According to the passage, there are__ ___ A.more bicycles than automobiles in the United States B.more automobiles than bicycles in the United States C.as many bicycles as automobiles in the United States D.fewer automobiles than bicycles in the United States 3.We can infer from the passage that Americans are__ ___ A.quick to follow the example of others B.interested in comfort and luxury C.concerned with the quality of their lives D.easy to accept new things 4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A.more and more adults are beginning to accept bicycle B.the bicycle has been existing for more than 150 years C.the automobile once affected bicycle production D.Americans have found the bicycle a better means of transportation 5.It can be concluded that if people continue to concern themselves with air pollution and physical fitness___ __ A.stricter air standard will be enforced(加强) B.fewer automobiles will be sold C.Americans will enjoy better health D.bicycle sales will continue to rise
Over 60 million persons in the United States own a credit card, which has had the effect of increasing consumption possibilities for households by allowing them to make heavy purchases without giving up a single dollar and coin for them. In fact, thousands of dollars of merchandise, ranging from autos, clothing, to electrical appliances (电器) are purchased by buyers through the credit card. Credit cards have also been of significant importance to the national economy. Businessmen have been encouraged to expand plant and equipment and hire additional personnel to meet the heavy demand for their products. The tendency of employment and income would be to rise significantly (显著的). Unfortunately, the ease with which buyers can increase their purchase with credit cards has caused them to overlook the additional costs. Purchases on credit cards are postponed payments. Buy-now-and-pay-later encourages buyers to use credit cards extensively. Since the buyer is in effect borrowing money for a specific purpose, he must expect to pay an interest charge(利息费). Interest is the price of using money over a long period of time. A close analysis of the use of credit cards for heavy purchases will show that the buyer has added to the cost of making these purchases. It must also be kept in mind that unpaid monthly balance means added interest charges. Furthermore, the use of credit cards will add to the cost of the product since the shopkeeper does not receive the money at the time of purchase. Shopkeeper might add on the cost of handing credits to the bill. 1. This passage is mainly concerned with__ ___ A. the cashless economy B. the cost of making payments by credit cards C. the advantages of credit cards D. the necessity of using credit cards 2. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true about the use of credit cards? A. It affects the level of employment and income. B. It is significant to the national economy. C. It stimulates people to buy more. D. It makes purchasing more complicated. 3. Interest charges for the use of credit cards reflect__ ___ A. the cost of owning a credit card B. the unpaid balance of a monthly bill C. the shopkeeper's cost of handling credit cards D. the price of using money for a long period of time 4. The author of the passage implies that__ ___ A. credit cards tend to raise interest charges B. buyers should not use credit cards at all C. buyers should make purchases with credit cards cautiously D. the use of credit cards reduces the consumption possibilities 5. What are the arguments against the use of credit cards? A.It may lead to the overgrowth of the national economy. B.The delay in the payment of shopping goods may bring damage to shopkeeprers’profits. C.Some people may intentionally purchase goods that they cannot possibly afford D.Those who pay by cash at the purchase will have to pay for the cost added to the product as the interest charge of credit cards
When I was walking down the street the other day, I happened to notice a small brown wallet lying on the ground. I picked it up and opened it to see if I could find out the owner's name. There was nothing inside it except some change and an old photograph a picture of a woman and a young girl about twelve years old, who looked like the woman's daughter. I put the photograph back and took the wallet to the police station, where I handed it to the desk sergeant. Before I left, the sergeant took down my name and address in case the owner might want to write and thank me. That evening I went to have dinner with my aunt and uncle. They also invited a young woman so that there would be four people at the table. Her face was familiar. I was quite sure that we had not met before, but I could not remember where I had seen her. While talking, however, the young woman happened to mention that she had lost her wallet that afternoon. All at once I realized where I had seen her. She was the young girl in the photograph, although she was now much older. She was very surprised, of course, when I was able to describe her wallet to her. Then I explained that I had recognized her from the photograph I had found in the wallet. My uncle insisted on going to the police station immediately to claim the wallet. As the police sergeant handed it over, he said that it was amazing that I had not only found the wallet, but also the person who had lost it. (1) The wallet which the writer found ________ . In 1972 the American Council on Education published forty pages of facts about college freshmen in the United States. They had got the facts from thousands of students in their first year of university study by asking such questions as these: 1.How old will you be on December 31 of this year? 2.How many miles is this college from your parents' home? 3.Where did you live while you were growing up? 4.Are your parents still living, and are they still married to each other? 5.How would you describe your present political views? The answers to these questions showed that seventy-eight percent of the freshmen were eighteen years old, and fourteen percent were nineteen. It is quite unusual for a freshmen to be younger than eighteen or older than nineteen. More than half of the freshmen were studying in colleges far from their parents' homes; only forty percent were within a distance of fifty miles from home. The report showed that most college students had grown up in or near cities. About one-fifth of the freshmen reported that they had been brought up in small towns; only seven percent came from farm families. Rather surprisingly, the report showed that only eight percent of the freshmen had parents who were divorced (离婚) or separated. In most cases, both parents were still alive and still married to each other. Politically, more than a third of the students described their views as “liberal” (自由的).Only sixteen percent considered themselves “conservative” (保守的). The large group, however, were the forty-six percent who described their politics as “middle of the road”. Very few called their political views “far left” or “far right”. (1) The American Council on Education learned these facts from ________. A.freshmen of a certain university B.students and their parents C.students and their teachers D.first-year students only (2) At what age do the Americans usually begin their college study? A.Many of them are 17. B.Few of them are over 18. C.Half of them are 19. D.More than 3/4 are 18. (3) While they were growing up, most of these students lived ________. A.in the countryside B.in or near large cities C.within a distance of fifty miles from home D.in small towns (4) About fifty percent of the students called their political views ________. A.“liberal” B.“conservative” C.“far right” D.“middle of the road” (5) Which of the following is not true? A.One fifth of the freshmen grew up in small towns. B.Most of these students' parents were alive and married to each other. C.Less than half of these students were studying some distance away from their parents' home. D.Politically, many college students consider “far left” better than “far right”.
A long, imaginary story about people is usually called a novel. It can be about any kind of man, woman, or child. It can be about kings, or Chicago newsboys, or housewives. The Frenchman, Victor Hugo, wrote his novel Les Miserables about a poor man who stole a loaf of bread to keep from starving. The American, Ernest Heminway, wrote A Farewell to Arms about a young American with the Italian Army in World War I. A novel can tell the story of any kind of action, over any period of time. The modern Irish writer, James Joyce, covers less than twenty-four hours in Ulysses. Yet Joyce takes a thousand pages to tell all that happens from the time one man gets up in the morning until he goes to bed early the next morning. A German writer, Herman Hesse, uses only one hundred and fifty pages in his novel Demian to cover a boy's life from the age of ten until he becomes a young man. A novel does not merely tell the things that people do. It also tells why they do them. The Red Badge of Courage, by the American novelist, Stephen Grane, tells about a young soldier in the War between the States who runs away the first time he is in battle. The book shows why he acted as he did. It describes his mental suffering until he overcomes his fears. People buy novels because they enjoy reading about other people. Alone among the literary forms, the novel satisfies the human desire to know and understand our fellow creatures. (1) According to the passage, a novel must be about ________. A.people B.kings C.war and peace D.what happens in a single day (2) Demcian is a novel written by ________. A.Victor Hugo B.Ernest Heminway C.Stephen Crane D.Herman Hesse (3) The amount of time a novel must cover is ________. A.a lifetime B.five years C.twenty-four hours D.not fixed (4) According to the passage, a novel should ________. A.experiment with new techniques B.describe the things that are familiar to the readers C.have at least one hundred and fifty pages D.satisfy our desire to understand what motivates other people (5) Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A.The History of the Novel B.The Nature of the Novel C.The World-famous Novelists D.The Importance of the Novel
There is much discussion today about whether economic growth is desirable. At an earlier period, our desire for material wealth may have been justified. Now, however, this desire for more than we need is causing serious problems. Even though we have good intentions, we may be producing too much, too fast. Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the world's population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease. People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people in the world. These proponents of economic growth believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world. Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization. This debate over the desirability of continued economic growth is of vital importance to business and industry. If those who argue against economic growth are correct, the problems they mention cannot be ignored. To find a solution, economists and the business community must pay attention to these problems and continue discussing them with one another. 1. According to those who argue against economic growth we must slow down for the following reasons except that A. our natural surroundings are in danger of being destroyed by industry B. the fixed supply of natural resources marks a point beyond which economic growth cannot continue C. the world population is ever increasing D. more efforts should be made to improve the quality of our material life 2. We may infer from the context that “proponents” (Para. 3) most probably means A. arguments in support of something B. disagreements C. people who argue for something D. people who argue against something 3. The passage is mainly about——. A. the contradiction between economists and the business community B. the present debate on economic growth C. the advantages and disadvantages of economic growth D. the importance of the debate on economic growth 4. We may infer from the passage that A. the author describes the case as it is B. the author is for economic growth C. the author is against continued economic growth D. the author is very much worded about the problems caused by continued economic growth 5.According to the proponents of economic growth, which of the following statements is true? A.Even though economy grows at the present rate, poverty still exists in the world. B.Economy must grow because poverty still exists. C.The present rate of economic growth is too slow. D.Economic growth may produce the money needed to get rid of poverty throughout the world
